Retired anchor Drury battles cruel ALS: 'You have Gehrig's disease, and you are going to die'

When legendary WLS-Channel 7 news anchor John Drury retired in2002 at the age of 75, the future looked bright for him and his wife,Ann.

He was going to devote more time to collecting antique toys. Shewas going to spend her days sailing, gardening and visiting hergrandchildren.

But life can be cruel.

Only four years later, John rarely leaves his bed in his Wheatonhome. He is aware of his surroundings and understands what people sayto him. But he cannot breathe, walk, talk or eat on his own. Aventilator does his breathing for him, and a feeding tube in hisstomach gives him nourishment. Unable to move his body except hisright arm, he has lost 78 pounds. …
