Qld: Church pays out paedophile victims

Nine victims of a paedophile priest who was repeatedly transferred from parish to parish
by the Catholic church, have received a $500,000 compensation package.

The Rockhampton diocese of the Catholic church paid the compensation to the victims
of Father MICHAEL JOSEPH MCARDLE for the sexual abuse they suffered between 1972 and 1979.

The male victims were aged between eight and 14 at the time and were abused at altar
boy camping trips, in church change rooms and in the presbytery.

Over 22 years, the church continued to transfer MCARDLE from parish to parish throughout
the state, even after complaints were made and he confessed to preying on children.

The 68-year-old pleaded guilty to a total of 62 charges in the District Court in Brisbane
in October, in relation to 14 boys and two girls who were his victims.

He was jailed for six years with a parole recommendation after two years.
