FED:Leaked Labor review is 'history': Smith

CANBERRA, Dec 5 AAP - Federal Labor figures have been keen to talk up improved voter
support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard, amid suggestions her 2010 election campaign
was derailed by Kevin Rudd and his supporters.

The last Newspoll of the year has Ms Gillard and her minority government at their highest
standing in six months.

At the same time voter backing for Tony Abbott has dropped to its lowest level since
he became opposition leader two years ago.

But the coalition maintains a big lead - 54-46 per cent - over Labor on a two-party
preferred basis.

Cabinet minister Stephen Smith was upbeat about the government's position going into
its second full year.

"I'd rather be us than them," he said of the two sides of politics.

But Mr Smith played down reports of a secret Labor Party report that criticised Mr
Rudd and his government.

The so-called sealed section of the 2010 election review also implied the former prime
minister and his supporters were behind leaks that derailed Julia Gillard's campaign.

The confidential report cites a period of drift and complacency for the Rudd government
which began in mid-2009 after the opposition was crippled by the Utegate affair.

Mr Smith admitted he had not seen the sealed section of the review, nor was he planning
to ask to see it.

The review was conducted in the aftermath of a "very tough and difficult" campaign
that ended in Labor forming minority government.

"It's part of history, let's move on," he said, adding he treated what was said in
the newspaper report as assertions.

The leaked report is likely to increase tensions between Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard and
follows her opening speech to the ALP national conference in which she mentioned every
Labor prime minister, other than her predecessor, in the past 70 years.

Cabinet minister Craig Emerson acknowledged Mr Rudd was not mentioned.

"But look, frankly, I think that in the great historic sweep of things that is not
of major importance," he said.

"What actually happened is that the PM has recognised Kevin's contribution before;
she will recognise it again."

Kopin Gets FCC Certification and Introduces Golden-i 3.5 Computing Headsets
Type: News

Kopin Corp. announced Development Kits for its Golden-i 3.5 Hands- Free Computing Headset are available to qualified customers at mygoldeni.com.

The Company said the Golden-i 3.5 headset has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a significant milestone in bringing this disruptive technology to production. Delivering near perfect multi-language speech recognition with a virtual 15- inch PC display, the Golden-i headset provides immediate hands-free access to nearly any digital information in the world and the ability to remotely control most wireless devices.
"This important certification has created an entirely new FCC product category, providing tremendous opportunities for Kopin," said Kopin CEO Dr. John C.C. Fan. "For example, we announced an agreement with Motorola Solutions last November to develop Golden-i headsets. The introduction of Golden-i 3.5 development kit to software application developers and select Motorola enterprise and public safety customers is a key milestone for this agreement."

According to a release, the Golden-i headset is a light wearable mobile computing and communication system that provides wireless, hands-free control of up to six devices at one time (Smart Phones, PCs, Industrial Equipment, Servers and Cloud Environments), wherever there are wireless resources (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi and/or Cellular).

Golden-i Gen 3.5 Headset Development Kits are $2,500 each (plus tax and shipping) and are available for purchase at mygoldeni.com. The Development Kit is designed for ease of use in adding speech recognition and gesture interface to industry standard and legacy software applications already running on PCs and enterprise systems.

The Company noted that each Development Kit includes: one Golden- i Gen 3.5 Headset; a Windows 7 application software emulation environment; Microsoft WinCE 6 application software porting platform; Nuance VoCon3200 Golden-i speech recognition platform available in more than 20 languages; online professional application development support provided by Adeneo, a Microsoft Gold Developer Partner; access to the global Golden-i users group; a second Li-ion battery and wall-plug battery charger; a user's guide; and a developers instruction manual.

Jeffrey Jacobsen, senior advisor to CEO and Golden-i program manager, Kopin Corp., said, "Imagine leaving your PC behind, yet having spontaneous access everywhere you go. Imagine remote access and control of industrial machines, service and maintenance equipment or providing remote shared and collaborative instruction with digital imaging to others without travel. Golden-i delivers instant access to digital information, on-demand Internet service and real-time streaming video to those that require their hands to do their job. Golden-i enables wireless control of most devices and systems we come in contact with everyday. The Golden-i 3.5 Development Kit provides immediate hands-free task analysis, enterprise deployment evaluation and legacy system optimization planning prior to full production 'all-weather' headsets becoming available in 2012."

Tom Bianculli, senior director, Emerging Business, Chief Technology Office, Motorola Solutions, said, "Motorola Solutions and Kopin have worked closely together for the past two years to research and identify opportunities for next generation wearable computing. Based upon customer interest and feedback from those working with early units, the new Gen 3.5 Headset Development Kit is a major leap forward in hands-free mobile enterprise computing and communications."

James Brehm, senior consultant, Mobility and the Unwired Experience, Frost & Sullivan, said, "Increasingly, companies are relying on field service technicians to deliver measurable value to the customer. Today's workforce requires one or both hands to perform their job, in addition to real-time access to customer records, scheduling, dispatch, service order and contracts management, service parts management and other software tools. The Golden-i headset provides field staff with a lightweight and easy- to-use tool for accessing and managing this data in the field, while allowing field staff to keep their hands free for more important tasks."

Kopin Corp.'s voice-activated, wireless, hands-free Golden-i mobile computing headsets, lightweight, power-efficient, ultra- small liquid crystal displays and heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) are revolutionizing the way people around the world see, hear and communicate.

Fed: The miracles that put Mary on the path to sainthood

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: The miracles that put Mary on the path to sainthood

SYDNEY, Dec 20 AAP - To achieve sainthood, two miracles must be officially confirmed
by the Vatican.

In 1993 the Vatican accepted Mary MacKillop was responsible for miraculously curing
a woman who had leukaemia in 1961.

Despite doctors giving her no hope, the woman fell pregnant and gave birth to a baby
boy after praying for Mother Mary's interception.

She then had another five children over the next decade.

"The whole thing was medically surprising," a Catholic priest remarked.

On Saturday Pope Benedict XVI confirmed Mother Mary's second miracle, paving the way
for her to become Australia's first saint.

The approved miracle involved the healing of a NSW Hunter Valley woman with inoperable
lung cancer during the mid 1990s.

Given just a few months to live, she asked the Sisters of Joseph, which Mother Mary
founded, to pray for her, and was given a relic of Mother Mary's to wear.

Against all odds she not only recovered but all traces of the cancer disappeared.

"I feel personally humbled and grateful to Mary MacKillop, and the influence she has
had on my life," the woman, who does not want her identity made known at this stage, said
in a statement read by Sr Anne Derwin at Mary MacKillop Chapel in North Sydney on Sunday.

"On a day like today, you might have a thousand questions to ask about my story, and
sometime in the future, I do want to share that with you."

The woman added Mother Mary had always provided her with hope and inspiration.

"I hope this news today provides others, especially younger Australians, with inspiration
and encouragement to live as generously and as compassionately as Mary did."

NSW: Murder accused was acting in self-defence, court told

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: Murder accused was acting in self-defence, court told

SYDNEY, Aug 11 AAP - A man charged with shooting dead two men on a Sydney street knew
them to have violent reputations and had acted in fear of his own life, a Sydney jury
has been told.

Farhad Qaumi, 26, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Bassam Chami, 26, and his high-school
friend Ibrahim Assad, 27, in Blaxcell Street, Granville, in Sydney's west, late on March
29, 2006.

His NSW Supreme Court trial on Monday was told Qaumi admitted shooting the men, but
in his opening address on Tuesday, Quami's lawyer Stephen Hanley said his client had been
acting in self-defence.

Mr Chami and Mr Assad arranged to meet Quami outside his home on the night of the shootings
to discuss an incident involving another man, Ali Mobayad, earlier in the day.

Mr Mobayad told the court Quami had taken exception to him offering a lift to one of
his young relatives, and had confronted him in a "very aggressive" manner.

He said Quami pulled up beside him in his car and "leant over to where his feet were
and his motion was cocking a gun back".

Under cross-examination, Mr Mobayad said he didn't see a gun, and only assumed Quami
had a weapon.

He told the court Quami then got out of his car and asked: "Are you after me?", to
which Mr Mobayad replied "no".

The pair ironed out their issues in a phone conversation later that day after realising
there had been a misunderstanding.

But Mr Mobayad said he then told Mr Chami and Mr Assad about the incident with Quami,
and Mr Chami got "a little bit upset and disturbed".

Mr Mobayad said he reluctantly handed over Quami's mobile phone number to Mr Assad,
who arranged the meeting.

Mr Hanley told the court Quami went to the meeting because he was threatened by the
two alleged victims.

"He had been threatened that if he didn't attend (the meeting) there would be violent
consequences against him and his reputation," he told the jury.

"He feared their reputations, that they were men of violence."

He said his client did not turn himself in to police after the shootings because he
had "received threats from at least one associate of Mr Assad that if he were collected
by police there were people waiting for him in jail and people were looking for him".

The court was told Quami's sister's home was targeted in a driveby shooting on March
30, and then his family home was shot at in a similar incident on April 3.

After several months on the run, "the accused changed his appearance - he dyed his
hair blond, because he was in fear, and in great fear of what might occur to him," Mr
Hanley said.

The trial before Justice Elizabeth Fullerton continues.

Qld: Third time lucky for bouncer on murder charge

By Christine Flatley

BRISBANE, April 1 AAP - A Gold Coast bouncer accused of murdering a pub patron has
been granted bail on his third bid for freedom.

Morne Ricardo Lombaard, 29, of Southport, will have to provide a $100,000 surety, report
daily to police and surrender his South African passport before he is released after Wednesday's
successful application in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.

Lombaard is accused of murdering 21-year-old Terii Tararo, who died in hospital after
a fight at the Fisherman's Wharf Tavern, at Main Beach, on May 18 last year.

Lombaard was working as a security guard at the time.

Two other security guards - Naeroa Petera Tepaukonui, 35, of Arundel, and Denis Legradi,
23, of Pacific Pines - have also been charged with murder.

Both have already been granted bail with sureties.

This is the third time Lombaard has applied for Supreme Court bail.

Justice Peter Dutney agreed to Lombaard's conditional release, accepting submissions
that the crown's case against the man had weakened significantly since he was first arrested.

The crown submitted that Lombaard should not be freed as he was still a flight risk,
but Justice Dutney said the strict bail conditions lessened the risk.

Fed: Foreign workers could help solve housing problem: minister

Fed: Foreign workers could help solve housing problem: minister

By Cathy Alexander

CANBERRA, April 23 AAP - Foreign construction workers could be brought in to help solve
Australia's housing affordability problem.

Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek spoke positively of the proposal in a speech to the
National Press Club, in which she warned a shortage of skilled labour could frustrate
the government's plan to build 50,000 cheap houses in the next five years.

"I am very concerned about the skills shortage in the building industry and in related
fields. I have been for some time," she said.

"I believe that training extra Australian workers and potentially filling the gap in
the short term are both important solutions."

The government is considering a Housing Industry Association (HIA) proposal for a special
visa scheme for thousands of overseas construction workers.

The government is also considering allowing more seasonal workers into the country,
with a focus on the Pacific region.

The housing minister pulled no punches about the gravity of the housing situation in
her speech, saying high house prices and rents were having serious economic and social
effects.

She spoke of families having to move constantly, people unable to move to take up jobs
because they could not find a place to live, and pensioners living in sub-standard conditions.

"This housing affordability problem has been barrelling down the highway at us like
a runaway road train for several years," Ms Plibersek said.

And she warned the problem would be here for some time.

"I know that people are having a really tough time today. I wish I could tell them
that there's an overnight solution ... but it would not be honest to say that," Ms Plibersek
said.

The government's plan to bring down housing costs includes building 50,000 cheap homes
for the rental market by offering tax credits to investors, $500 million to lower local
fees and taxes on new housing, and a saving scheme for prospective first home buyers.

Ms Plibersek said these measures would have an impact only in the medium to long term.

She sought to reassure home owners that increasing the supply of housing would not
cause house prices to fall. She said the market was divided into sub-markets and increasing
supply in one would not significantly affect the others.

"We don't operate in one housing market in Australia," she said.

NSW: Fuel companies face mandatory ethanol quotas

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: Fuel companies face mandatory ethanol quotas

By Peter Jean and Drew Cratchley

SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - Petrol companies in NSW will be forced to add ethanol to fuel,
regardless of who wins the March 24 state election.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma today set a September deadline for two per cent ethanol content
in fuel supplied by wholesalers to petrol stations if his Labor government is re-elected.

"If re-elected, I will mandate from September this year a minimum of two per cent ethanol
be blended into the total volume of petrol sold in NSW as a first step towards 10 per
cent ethanol content by 2011," Mr Iemma said.

The coalition has previously announced it would expand ethanol use in fuel to 10 per
cent by 2011 and introduce grants to assist service stations to upgrade equipment to dispense
ethanol fuel blends.

Mr Iemma said mandating the addition of ethanol to petrol would lead to a drop in greenhouse
gas emissions and create jobs in the ethanol production industry.

The government would publish figures on whether wholesalers are meeting the new target
before considering if penalties should be introduced for non-compliance.

Opposition environment spokesman Michael Richardson said the government should provide
service stations with financial assistance to convert equipment for ethanol fuel blends.

"If the premier is going to adopt our policy on the eve of the election, he should
take all our proposals on board," Mr Richardson said.

Australian Biofuels Association executive director Bob Gordon said he was pleased both
sides of NSW politics supported the use of ethanol fuel blends in vehicles.

"What is particularly welcome in NSW is both the government and the opposition are
fully behind bio-fuels use," Mr Gordon said.

Questioned today about Labor's election campaign launch on Sunday, Mr Iemma denied
he was trying to publicly distance himself from former premier Bob Carr by failing to
invite him to the event.

Guests at the launch will include Mr Iemma's family, friends, leaders from his local
community in southwestern Sydney and hospital staff he worked with as health minister.

Mr Iemma said Mr Carr had been Labor's most successful leader and he and other party
luminaries would be invited to other campaign events.

"He (Mr Carr) has been the most successful Labor leader - a man that I respect enormously,"

Mr Iemma said.

He said federal Labor Leader Kevin Rudd would play a role in Labor's state election campaign.

"I've already done a number of things with Kevin. He's off to a good start and I'm
happy to participate with Kevin," Mr Iemma said.

Opposition Leader Peter Debnam was today preparing behind closed doors for Friday night's
televised election debate against Mr Iemma.

NSW:Drugs fuelled mental problem for alleged animal abuser:court

By Paul Carter, Police Reporter

SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - A finance company director charged with animal cruelty and bestiality
had serious mental health problems caused by illegal drug use, his lawyer told a Sydney
court.

New Zealander Brendan Francis McMahon, 36, was refused bail today when he faced Central
Local Court on 18 charges of aggravated animal cruelty involving 17 rabbits and a guinea
pig, one count of bestiality and two of possessing cannabis.

McMahon, from the Sydney beachside suburb of Tamarama, will also be charged with six
new bestiality offences relating to rabbits before his next court appearance, the court
was told today.

Police allege all offences were committed between July 20 and August 11 this year.

McMahon was arrested after the bodies of between 40 and 50 rabbits were discovered
in a lane beside his city office, the court was told.

Magistrate Allan Moore said he was unwilling to release McMahon before authorities
could complete a full psychiatric report.

McMahon's lawyer Douglas Marr told the court his client needed to be released to see
a psychiatrist privately.

He said McMahon had been suffering serious mental health problems brought on by the
use of the illegal amphetamine ice.

"He had a serious drug problem with ice over that period of time and was not sleeping
while he was using that drug," Mr Marr told the court.

"He was suffering a serious mental health problem involved with the drug use and it
appears he is in need of psychiatric help."

Mr Marr also said McMahon had benefited from being off drugs while in custody and that
he intended never to use them again.

In the meantime all his business dealings were "falling in a heap", he said.

Mr Marr said his client could offer $5,000 surety and would promise not to go within
50 metres of a pet shop if granted bail.

However, Mr Moore denied bail until authorities could complete their own psychiatric report.

McMahon was remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on September 30.

Police and the RSPCA earlier launched an investigation after the bodies of three mutilated
rabbits and a pet store box were found on July 20 in toilets at McMahon's business address
in the city, the police statement of facts said.

A description of McMahon provided by the pet shop was circulated to other retailers
and he was eventually traced using credit card details.

More dead or badly injured rabbits were found when McMahon was arrested early on August
12 following a surveillance operation.

Vic: Westpac stopwork could close branches: union

Westpac customers are being urged not to do their banking tomorrow morning when hundreds
of Victorian bank staff hold a meeting to discuss pay and conditions.

The Finance Sector Union says services will be affected, and some branches may close
when retail workers at Westpac branches hold a stop work meeting at 9.30 am (AEST).

SIDELIGHTS:

A research scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, Carlton K. Erickson has studied the effects of alcohol on the brain since the 1970s. His research has led to the conclusion that alcoholism, as well as some other addictions, are the results of a neurochemical disorder. He is the author or editor of several books on the subject, including the 2007 title, The Science of Addiction: From Neurobiology to Treatment, "a very valuable resource to individuals with a drug dependence problem, their family members and friends, health educators and counselors, undergraduate and graduate lecturers, and students," according to Phi Kappa Phi Forum contributor Jean M. Bidlack.

In The Science of Addiction, Erickson concludes that, as Families, Systems & Health reviewer Anthony E. Brown noted, "chemical dependence is a chronic, relapsing medical brain disease and that those with this disease should have a variety of treatment options made available to them." Erickson uses a number of proofs and information to support this contention. He describes what changes occur in the brain as a person becomes addicted to a drug or to alcohol. As Bidlack explained, "All drugs and substances to which people can become addicted 'hijack' the brain's dopamine-reward pathway." Erickson presents case studies as well as neuroscientific research to support his findings, taking the reader through a primer on brain functioning as well as on the difference between drug addiction and drug dependency. He also examines the role genetics plays in addiction as well as therapies for treating addiction. For Bidlack, this was "an excellent book."

Similar praise came from other reviewers. Brown commented, "Erickson's thesis that drug and alcohol dependence is a medical brain disease is well presented and may help expand treatment options and empathy for those struggling with it." He further observed, "This book is an informative resource for both clinicians and investigators of chemical dependence and a welcome addition" to the literature. Writing on the Institute of Alcohol Studies Web site, Killian Welch, however, felt that Erickson relied too much solely on a disease model for addiction. Welch concluded: "It is important … that in the pursuit of a medical explanation for substance dependence, societal interventions known to have major benefits for the population as a whole are not sidelined." On the other hand, a reviewer for Internet Bookwatch wrote that "any collection strong in health science needs this."

Erickson told CA: "As a scientist, writing was always difficult because of the precision required to write scientific manuscripts. Because of the need to write well, I began teaching graduate students to write better and edit their own work. I continue to teach writing in a communication skills course every summer. My own writing grew from scientific papers to book chapters and reviews, then into coedited books, and finally resulted in my own sole-authored book. At every step I found it became easier and more exciting to write.

"I am most influenced by the thought that readers are thirsty for what I have to say (at least that's what I keep telling myself to stay motivated).

"I believe in not trying to be perfect with the first draft. I remember when I couldn't get the first sentence exactly right, and it drained my motivation. It is much better and more fun to write freely and then go back and correct the first draft. I love to edit; in fact, when I write an article with someone else, I usually ask them to write the first draft and then I come along and make it better! This is my strength.

"I am most surprised at how the final printed manuscript looks better than it did when it left my computer. It's like: 'Did I write that?' Seeing the finished product is a real thrill.

"I really like my book The Science of Addiction, which was the first book I wrote by myself. Not having a coauthor was a bit scary, but my editors were so good it made writing the several drafts very enjoyable and most rewarding.

"My books are written in 'regular' language about scientific research, so I hope that my audiences will learn something new about a topic that is rarely presented to treatment professionals and the public in language they can understand. Addiction is not an easy scientific area because there are so many nonscientific opinions about the topic. Getting scientific evidence to break through all the myths and folklore is not easy, but hopefully my books can help do that."

Home Shopping Europe creates 45 jobs in Wrexham; RETAIL DISTRIBUTION: TV and internet outlet sets up UK operation.(Business)

ONE of the world's biggest home-shopping television channels has chosen Wrexham as its distribution centre for Britain.

Home Shopping Europe, which is already well established in Germany and Italy, will use a distribution complex on the Wrexham Industrial Estate to store and dispatch jewellery, gifts and other items ordered by viewers of its new UK channel.

The operation will create 45 jobs this year with more to follow if the channel is a success.

Workers at the new centre, which was formally opened on Thursday, will inspect and polish all jewellery before it is dispatched to customers.

The contract was won by logistics giant TDG, which already distributes goods from its Wrexham site for several internet and catalogue companies, including Littlewoods Index and WH Smith.

The contract is a coup for the North-East Wales Partnership, a group representing local authorities which first approached Home Shopping Europe at its US home two years ago to show it what the region can offer overseas companies.

For the Home Shopping Europe service, TDG has created a high-security area for the valuable goods which will be handled.

Security at the 450,000sq ft site generally has been tightened. Home Shopping Europe uses 50,000sq ft of that area. About pounds 200,000 has been spent on upgrading the overall site to meet the "e-fulfilment" needs of all of TDG's customers there.

Christian Unterseer, of Home Shopping Europe, said, "It is vital that the central distribution company gives our customers the best possible shopping experience, with efficient service and quality products.

"We are confident TDG's Wrexham site is the best for the job. Our mission is to make sure our customers get the best quality goods.

"TDG will be responsible for inspecting and cleaning 100pc of jewellery when it enters and leaves its warehouses, so customers will always receive immaculate products."

Home Shopping Europe, at St Albans, was launched on Wednesday and broadcasts throughout the week, 24 hours per day, on Sky Digital channel 649 and on the internet.

Its core lines are beauty products, jewellery, personal fitness equipment, electronic goods, homeware, DIY goods, collectables and gifts.

Network Commerce Exceeds Consensus Expectations for Four Consecutive Quarters With Revenue of $33.4 Million in the Third Quarter 2000, a 340% Increase From Third Quarter 1999.

Business Editors

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2000

Consumer Network, which Comprises 66% of Total Revenue, Expects to

Reach Pro Forma Profitability in the First Quarter 2001

Network Commerce Expects to Reach Overall Pro Forma Profitability

in the Fourth Quarter 2001

Third Quarter Pro Forma Net Loss Improves by 20%

From the Previous Quarter

Network Commerce Inc. (Nasdaq:NWKC), the global technology infrastructure and services company, announced today financial results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2000.

Total revenue for the third quarter was $33.4 million, an increase of 24% from revenue of $26.9 million in the second quarter of 2000, and an increase of over 340% from revenue of $7.6 million in the third quarter of 1999. Network Commerce derives revenue from the Network Commerce Business Network, including eBusiness Services, and the Network Commerce Consumer Network. CPM based advertising revenue was approximately 3% of total revenue in the third quarter.

-- Third quarter revenue from the Network Commerce Business Network was $11.4 million or 34% of total revenue. The Network Commerce Business Network consists of domain name registration, hosting, e-commerce services, transaction processing and online marketplaces for businesses. Revenue from the Network Commerce Business Network is comprised of fees from technology licensing, transaction processing, business services, online direct marketing and advertising. -- Third quarter revenue from the Network Commerce Consumer Network was $22.0 million or 66% of total revenue. The Network Commerce Consumer Network consists of online marketplaces and third party Internet sites. Revenue from the Network Commerce Consumer Network is comprised of fees from technology licensing, transaction lead fees, online direct marketing programs and advertising.

"For the fourth consecutive quarter, we have exceeded consensus analyst expectations for financial performance," said Dwayne Walker, chairman and chief executive officer of Network Commerce. "Our increase in revenue and continuing loss reduction is indicative of the strength of our business and our ability to execute the business model. This performance provides a foundation for the Consumer Network to reach profitability in the first quarter of 2001 and the company to reach overall profitability in the fourth quarter 2001 on a pro forma basis."

As of September 30, 2000, Network Commerce had over $87.1 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as compared to $84.9 million in the second quarter of 2000. Network Commerce has sufficient resources to support operations beyond its targeted profitability date of the fourth quarter of 2001.

Third quarter 2000 pro forma gross profit increased to $18.3 million or 55% of total revenue, compared to $14.1 million or 52% of total revenue in the second quarter of 2000. Additionally, third quarter 2000 pro forma gross margin of 55% is an increase of 19 percentage points from third quarter 1999 gross margin of 36%. Network Commerce expects gross margin to reach 60% of total revenue by the end of 2001.

Total pro forma operating expenses in the third quarter increased by only 5% to $34.3 million from $32.6 million in the second quarter of 2000. The growth rate in pro forma operating expenses from the first quarter to the second quarter 2000 was 10%; thus Network Commerce achieved a 50% reduction in the quarterly pro forma operating expense growth rate from the previous quarter. As a result, total pro forma operating expense only increased $1.7 million or 5% sequentially while revenues increased $6.5 million or 24% sequentially. Network Commerce is focused on controlling its operating expense as it proceeds towards its goal of achieving profitability in the fourth quarter of 2001, on a pro forma basis consistent with current reporting.

Walker continued, "Managing our overall expense is a top priority for the company. Total pro forma expenses as a percentage of revenue continues to decline, in line with our strategy of successfully executing the business model while driving towards profitability."

Pro forma loss from operations was $16.0 million in the third quarter of 2000, as compared to $18.5 million in the second quarter of 2000. This represents a $2.5 million sequential quarter to quarter decrease in the pro forma loss from operations, which has also declined every quarter since the fourth quarter of 1999.

Pro forma net loss decreased by $3.4 million to $13.7 million or $0.23 per share for the third quarter 2000 compared to $17.1 million or $0.30 per share for the second quarter 2000.

Pro forma figures exclude the effects of non-recurring charges and non-cash charges relating to the amortization of intangible assets, stock-based compensation and deferred income tax benefits. Pro forma gross profit for the third quarter 2000 excludes a one-time charge from ceasing a business activity with Inktomi, Inc.

BUSINESS AND MERCHANT GROWTH

The number of businesses on the Network Commerce Business Network grew 14% to 1,025,000 in the third quarter from 899,000 in the second quarter of 2000. As of September 30, 2000 there were over 232,000 businesses and merchants utilizing Network Commerce's infrastructure and proprietary technology. This is a 91% increase from the second quarter of 2000 and represents over 22% of the total number of businesses on the network. As of September 30, 2000, the Network Commerce Business Network had relationships with over 10,600 affiliate sites, an increase from 6,500 affiliate sites in the second quarter of 2000.

The number of syndicate sites on the Network Commerce Consumer Network increased to 43,900 up from 27,200 syndicate sites in the second quarter of 2000. Premier merchants paying greater than $100,000 per month on the Network Commerce Consumer Network grew 63% to 26 merchants in the third quarter 2000 from 16 in the second quarter 2000.

AUDIENCE GROWTH AND CUSTOMER METRICS

During the third quarter of 2000, visits to Network Commerce properties increased 61% to over 106.7 million, from 66.2 million in the second quarter of 2000.

For the month of September 2000, PC Data Online ranked Network Commerce as having the 14th most visited Web property (all Network Commerce Web properties combined) on the Internet, ahead of the CBS, Go2Net Network, Real Networks, GoTo.com, Inc. and InfoSpace. This us up from a ranking of 16th by PC Data Online in June 2000.

OPERATING INFRASTRUCTURE

As a global infrastructure provider, Network Commerce has invested over $200 million in technology, which includes four data centers with over 500 servers. This highly redundant, highly secure infrastructure has a bandwidth of 400 megabits/second and is currently operating at 40% utilization. Network Commerce is also in the process of opening two additional data centers, one of which is in the United Kingdom.

Tours shortened.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

US President George W Bush announced a return to shorter 12-month tours for US Army troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, ending 15-month tours that have strained the force. In a nationwide speech, Bush said he has ordered Defence Secretary Robert Gates "to reduce deployment lengths from 15 months to 12 months for all active army soldiers deploying to the Central Command area of operations."

He said the changes to the Central Command area, which covers Iraq and Afghanistan, are designed to "ease the burden on our troops and families" and will be effective for soldiers deploying after August 1. "We will also ensure that our army units will have at least a year home for every year in the field," Bush added in the speech carried on national television.

The longer tours were imposed a year ago to enable the surge of US forces to Iraq. Currently, there are over 150,000 US troops in Iraq. After the surge brigades leave, the total will be around 140,000 troops, which is still more than were deployed in Iraq before the surge. In his speech to the nation, Bush said Iraq was still too fragile to reduce US forces to below 140,000 troops in the country.

He announced that he would complete a limited withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in July, then freeze any further draw-downs to enable military commanders to review the war effort. "Our nation owes a special thanks to the soldiers and families who have supported this extended deployment," Bush said. "We owe a special thanks to all who served in the cause of freedom in Iraq.

"The stress on our force is real, but the joint (military) chiefs have assured me that our all volunteer force is strong and resilient enough to fight and win this war on terror," the president said.

BONQO Sweeps Into Lone Star State as Alternative to Craigslist.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 18, 2011

The state of Texas will soon be finding the answer to a safer and savvier online classifieds website in the form of BONQO.com, a new website dedicated to ensuring a hassle-free and user friendly marketplace experience. The site's northwest introduction will now provide Texas with a free and pre-screened medium for online peer-to-peer transactions. In light of BONQO.com' s regional expansions and fast-growing user base, it becomes apparent the new marketplace will be a strong and safe contender in an otherwise unregulated digital world.

The Santa Barbara-based website was established by Ella Internet Technologies in late 2010 and, following the family-friendly site's internet introduction, has experienced considerable success in the Southern California area. The site's goal to remain a safer alternative to marketplace powerhouses such as Craigslist has since remained a top priority for BONQO.com staff.

According to their spokesperson, Taylor Scott, "Our mission is to make online classifieds safe and clean for all users. To achieve this goal, we've found a way to manually screen each and every ad to verify the legitimacy as well as their consistency and completeness, so those who browse our listings aren't likely to be met with possible fraudulent, offensive, adult-oriented or distasteful material," Mr. Scott explained. Unlike classifieds such as Craigslist, BONQO.com's unique human element ensures the quality of its content for its users.

"Computer filters are not a good substitute for human eyes and intuition," Mr. Scott added. "Our staff do their utmost every single business day of the week to detect and eliminate possible scams before they are published." He believes since their beginning, their approach to be a safer online classified has led the way to more responsible and family-friendly web postings.

Among the strategic features BONQO.com has implemented since the site's public beta launch include the elimination of a "Personals" or "Adult Services" categories, further cementing their reputation as a secure and "family-friendly" source to reckon with in today's unpredictable online world. Texas will now have the luxury to find anything from real estate to puppies on the site, and with the assurance the ads have all been manually pre-screened.

The company announced their Texas launch on July 14, 2011.
